Girl Crush
A wise friend once told me that in life it’s always about attraction, not promotion. You can’t make someone like you- they have to want to. On the flip side, you can end up liking someone for inexplicable reasons. Again, attraction rules.
Twitter is a social platform, but to me it’s really the best example of the ultimate blind date. It’s totally normal and accepted to not know your Twitter friend’s real name or even face (ehem), but yet you feel the friendship and there’s nothing virtual about it. Social Media experts often say content is king, but I say personality is.
I’ve been out of high school for a long time, so the word crush is not really part of my vernacular, that is, until Twitter. The crush is not someone you want to date, it’s someone you want to be close to, be friends with or just plain and simple, be (please note: not in a single white female sort of way). It’s a thrilling combination of awe, admiration and respect and I feel it on Twitter all day long.
Whether it’s the uber-talented, next Martha Stewart (@psimadethis), the girls who succeed with brains & integrity (@KatherinePower @Hillary_Kerr), or the ever-fabulous, you want to walk in their shoes (@BagSnob), there is a female admiration fest all around.
People like @savvyauntie who had a niche idea and ran with it, @YuliZ who keeps making the never been done before, happen, @BaubleBar who pooled their ivy league brains to start a mega bauble business or @GiltAlexandra who is the poster child for thinking nowhere near the box. These are women who set standards not just in business, but in being human and believe me there are many more.
The best part of all of this is that I met them all through Twitter. Ah yes, the #GirlCrush is alive and well in social media. Sure we can focus on the negative ‘mean girls’ stereotype of years past, but I’m a glass half full kind of gal. There are so many women who share a mutual respect and admiration and I think it’s high time to promote it. Who knows, maybe we’ll even make a new stereotype. So cheers to the #GirlCrush. May we all continue to admire eachother for all the varied and special gifts we all have to offer.
